Lime as building material

Limestone-based building materials present one of the oldest building technologies that originated in ancient times, underwent centuries of innovation and development proving its reliability, and is now on the market as a natural building material.

About 2,500 BC the ancient Egyptians came out with reconstituted limestone to build the Great Pyramids, ancient Romans used Roman concrete (mixture of lime, volcanic deposit and various aggregates) to build cities of their empire, ancient Chinese used lime polymer mortars during the construction of The Great Wall of China.

Nowadays lime-based building materials are given the second birth as the world market of construction materials is shifting towards safe and ecologically-friendly products.

Japan followed its own way with limestone-based technologies keeping an emphasis on natural components and traditional techniques. Since recently, the traditional Japanese limestone plaster Shikkui is available in other countries outside Japan.
