Tips for Applying Plaster: Part 2
In professional settings, it’s often said that “80% is preparation, 20% is application,” which shows just how important preparation is before applying the plaster.
Make sure to apply masking tape securely so it doesn’t peel off while you’re applying the plaster. This will ensure a clean boundary between the plastered surface and the unplastered areas.
You can rest assured even if plaster spills onto the floor or splatters onto or sticks to areas you don’t want it to reach.
Remove anything that might interfere with applying the plaster as much as possible and ensure the surface is flat.
Securely cover any items that cannot be removed.
◉ Lighting
Remove the light fixture covers. |
Remove the light fixture. |
Cover the ceiling housing. |
◉Curtain rods, shelves, and handrails
Remove the curtain rods and cover them. |
Use a screwdriver to remove the brackets, then cover the screw holes with masking tape. |
Tip! Clean the area before applying masking tape Use a brush or similar tool to remove any dust or wood shavings from the areas where you’ll apply the masking tape. If debris remains, the masking tape may peel off during the process, leading to mistakes. |
Start by protecting the floor, then move on to the baseboards, window frames, electrical outlets, and air conditioning units in that order.
To prevent the masking tape from peeling off, be sure to thoroughly remove any debris from the areas where you’ll apply it beforehand.
◉ Floor
Lay a blue tarp on the floor. |
Leave a gap of about 10 cm between the tarp and the wall. |
◉ Baseboard
Leave a gap of 1–2 mm (equal to the thickness of the plaster) between the baseboard and the wall, then apply masking tape. |
Apply Corona Masker over the masking tape, making sure it does not extend beyond the wall. |
Extend the Corona Masker all the way to the floor protection. |
Secure the Corona Masker and floor protection by attaching them together with masking tape. |
◉Window frames
As with the baseboards, leave a 1–2 mm gap between the masking tape and the wall, then apply the Corona Masker on top of the masking tape. |
Secure any excess vinyl from the Corona Masker by tucking it in toward the window. (This prevents falling plaster from getting in.) |
◉ Electrical Outlet
Use a screwdriver to remove the screws from the cover. (Save the metal fittings and other parts.) |
Remove the cover. |
Protect the outlet by applying masking tape directly to it. |
◉ Air Conditioner Protection
Secure the cord to the air conditioner unit with masking tape. |
Apply the Corona Masker directly to the air conditioner unit. |
Gather the plastic film of the Corona Masker toward the inside and secure it with masking tape. |
If floor protection is already in place during new construction or renovation work, we recommend asking the contractor to leave it as is.
Do not spread the Corona Masker wider than necessary; instead, secure the unfolded Corona Masker to the floor protection by taping them together with masking tape.
Tip! When to Remove the Protective Covering Once you’ve finished applying the plaster, remove all the masking tape before it dries. If you remove it after the plaster has completely dried, the plaster on the wall will peel off along with the tape. If the plaster has dried and the masking tape won’t peel off cleanly, don’t force it—instead, cut the tape with a utility knife and peel it off carefully. |
