We’d already experienced the beauty of shikkui walls firsthand when we had a plasterer apply shikkui to our main house. This time, we wanted to plaster the guest house ourselves, so we searched high and low for a DIY option—and that’s when we discovered NURI 2. We were told that masking off the area was a lot of work but essential, so we focused our efforts there first. While applying the shikkui, we chatted with friends—it was the kind of free-form application that only amateurs can pull off. We could feel our skills improving little by little, and as we all patted ourselves on the back, the experience just got more and more fun as time went on. In the end, we were able to share a sense of accomplishment and had a really great time together. There’s really nothing like doing it yourself.

After much deliberation, I decided to go with cream yellow this time. Since I designed the space to allow for various wall decorations, the area to be painted ended up being quite large. However, the cream yellow creates a gentle, laid-back atmosphere that envelops the room, making it a warm and soothing space. The textured walls, which cast subtle shadows, look great under both daytime light and evening lighting, allowing me to relax and enjoy time with friends whenever I want. I’m truly delighted with how this space turned out.

First of all, it was easy to prepare the base by simply applying the sealer. And above all, I love this shikkui—made entirely from natural materials—because it creates a space that brings a sense of calm and reassurance. I also love that when it gets dirty or I need to patch holes, I can simply sand it down to make it look clean and seamless again. Maintenance is always a concern with plastered walls, after all. NURI2 had so many great features.
It was truly wonderful that we were able to apply authentic shikkui with our own hands.
