While the shikkui was drying completely, I was a little bothered by the fairly strong smell of the seaweed paste. There was absolutely none of that unpleasant chemical odor you get from paint. It was great that my kids seemed to really enjoy taking part—it made for some wonderful memories.

Now that I’ve learned that I can easily create various patterns depending on the painting technique and tools I use, I’d like to try out different plastering techniques on the other walls that I haven’t painted yet.

The hallway walls. By applying shikkui to the hallway walls—which don’t usually get much light—they turned pure white, and perhaps because they reflect even a little light, the whole house feels brighter now.
