Step 8: How to Paint by Area

2026.08.20

Tips for Applying Plaster #8

By learning the optimal amount of plaster and the proper application technique for each area, and by ensuring the material is applied thoroughly all the way to the four corners, you’ll significantly improve the quality of your finish. If it’s hard to see, shine a light on the surface to check that the plaster has reached all the corners.

Amount of Plaster and Trowel Position Based on the Area Being Plastered

[For Right-Handed Users] There are the following eight patterns for positioning the trowel to apply plaster, depending on the area being coated. For left-handed users, the left and right sides are reversed.

a: When filling the left and right corners

b: When applying plaster to the left edge or bottom edge

c: When applying plaster to the lower left corner

d: When applying plaster to the upper-right corner

e: When applying to the upper-left corner

f: When painting the lower-right corner

g: When painting the right edge

h: When painting a large surface

How to Paint a Ceiling

Keep the momentum going—turn the trowel board upside down decisively and load the trowel with a generous amount of material.

① Mask off the junction with the wall, and set up the scaffolding, adjusting the height so there is a gap of about 10 cm between the ceiling and your head.

② Start from the corner, apply the material firmly where the ceiling meets the wall, and pull it toward you.

③ Scoop the material from the trowel board onto the trowel, then push it upward and lift it off the trowel board.

④ Once you’ve lifted it off the trowel board, apply it directly to the wall.

How to Apply to Large Surfaces

The basic approach is to start from the ceiling and work down the wall. If you’re right-handed, start from the left corner. If you’re left-handed, start from the right corner.

① Start painting from the top of the corner on the opposite side of your dominant hand, filling in the edge where the wall meets the ceiling.

② Work your way down, taking care to avoid streaks as you paint along the edge of the wall.

③ Once you’ve finished painting the edges, move on to painting the remaining large areas.

How to Paint Corners

Once you start painting, try not to stop or take a break in the middle of a continuous section. Pausing and resuming later can cause unnatural steps or color differences.

◉ How to Paint Outside Corners

① Place the tip of the trowel against the wall at the outside corner.

② Lift the blade in the direction of travel and slide it downward.

③ Use a standard trowel to smooth out the walls on both sides.

◉How to apply plaster to inside corners

① Place the tip of the corner trowel against the wall.

② Lift the blade in the direction of travel and slide it downward.

③ Use a standard trowel to level the walls on both sides.
