At Tagawa Shikkui Labs’ Research and Development Department, we use the know-how accumulated over many years of producing shikkui plaster, combined with insights derived from data obtained through our analytical and testing facilities, to improve existing products and develop new ones. We standardize elements that are difficult to articulate—such as experience and intuition—through numerical data, using this to enhance product quality and usability. This is why our products have been accepted even by clients with stringent quality standards.

Areas of Analysis

Our Research and Development Department analyzes and evaluates products across five key areas: composition, microstructure, physical properties, color, and durability.

Component and Composition Analysis

Identifying what a product is made of.

We use X-ray fluorescence analysis and infrared spectroscopy to examine ingredients and their proportions, helping detect counterfeit products and verify quality.

Morphology and Microstructure

Observing surfaces and particles.

We use electron microscopes, optical microscopes, and particle size analyzers to observe microstructures and particles, supporting foreign matter analysis and raw material quality control.

Physical Properties and Strength

Quantifying strength and physical properties.

We measure strength, viscosity, moisture content, and film thickness using universal testing machines, viscometers, moisture meters, and film thickness gauges.

Color and Appearance

Quantifying Appearance.

We use spectrophotometers and gloss meters to quantify color differences and gloss levels, helping monitor and manage color fading over time.

Weathering and Environmental Testing

Measures the effects of aging and environmental factors.

Using accelerated weathering testers and constant temperature-humidity chambers, we simulate and evaluate degradation caused by light, heat, moisture, and temperature changes.

After Signing a contrat

While conducting comprehensive measurements of components and performance, we prepare the numerical data required for quality control of custom-made and OEM products, as well as measurement reports for test samples.

Data Presentation and Evaluation

For contract testing services, we compile the measurement results and analysis into a report and deliver it to you. For custom and OEM production, we provide the quantified evaluation criteria necessary for quality control, and you can inspect the actual products and their finishes at the Shikkui Consultation Room.

Mass Production, OEM, and Ongoing Collaboration

Based on the evaluation, we will proceed to mass production, OEM, and ongoing joint development.

Custom and OEM orders vary significantly depending on the specifics, so please contact us for a consultation. For testing services, the turnaround time is typically about one month, including the preparation of the analysis report; however, if you need your results urgently, please let us know during your initial consultation.
