White, Reimagined

A century of craftsmanship,
beginning with the white of shikkui.
The deeper we explore,
the more possibilities our materials reveal.
We are a shikkui manufacturer based in Tagawa City, Fukuoka —
carrying forward the wisdom we've inherited,
and connecting it to architecture, to the environment, to industry,
and to the world.

Hometown, Tagawa.

about_01

Tagawa City is located in the Chikuhō region of Fukuoka Prefecture and has a history of prosperity as a coal-mining town that once supported Japan’s development. Using the high-quality limestone produced in this area, we have been manufacturing calcium carbonate since the Taishō era, as well as our current flagship product, shikkui.

We quarry high-purity limestone from "Sekinoyama," a mountain located near our factory, and calcine it in-house — a process that allowed us to become the first in Japan to create ready-mixed shikkui that could be used immediately on-site. Drawing on this expertise, we have carried out numerous restoration projects on Important Cultural Heritages across Japan, including castles and Buddhist temples. In each case, we custom-formulate the material for the specific property — restoring, as closely as possible, the materials originally used at the time of construction, while also optimizing the mix for the site's environment and the building's condition. With one of Japan's most extensive product lineups, spanning everything from these cultural properties to ordinary residential homes, we continue to meet the exacting standards of today's architects and craftsmen.

What We Can Do for the Next 100 Years

Group 1000008249

Creating what does not yet exist from what we have inherited. Carrying forward the innovative spirit of our predecessors, who were never afraid to take on the challenge of new value, we are pioneering new fields that go beyond the boundaries of shikkui. From fine ceramics molding using our proprietary 4,000-ton press machine, to soy-based resin paint — highly biodegradable and holding promise for reducing marine microplastics — and even supporting Ukraine's reconstruction through on-site, low-carbon tile manufacturing, we are launching a new century in which diverse businesses are emerging from our shikkui business as a foundation.

Bringing the Spirit of OSEKKAI to the World

about_04

True to our president’s words, “We want to stand by our customers no matter what challenges they face on the job site,” we may be a bit overbearing by nature. We don’t want to be mere sellers of materials; rather, we aspire to be the closest allies who work side by side with craftsmen and designers to fully realize their visions. We are committed to making this mindset—of wholeheartedly supporting the people right in front of us as they face challenges—the new norm worldwide.
