Installation Precautions
  • When mixing in sand, using too much sand will result in insufficient strength, so please observe the specified amount.
  • Extended storage does not affect quality; however, as a general guideline, for material that is six months or older since manufacture, perform a test application first. If water retention has decreased, add binder (powdered Gloiopeltis seaweed).
  • Always apply a sealer beforehand on earthen walls, substrates with poor adhesion, or glazed roof tiles.
  • Roof shikkui work performed in autumn or winter is prone to frost damage, which can cause poor curing and flaking, so please avoid construction during this period. (This applies even on days that are warm during daytime, if frost occurs during the season.)

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.

What are the characteristics of the “Shirokabe Roof Shikkui”?

A.

This shikkui for roofs was developed for repairing tile roof joints and for roof construction. It uses traditional “cooked binder” and is pre-mixed with oil, providing waterproofing capabilities and excellent workability that can withstand harsh outdoor conditions.

Q.

What is the difference between this and “Shirokabe Black Shikkui”?

A.

The main differences are “form (paste or powder)” and “color.”"Shirokabe Roof Shikkui" is a ready-to-use paste (white-based) that already contains oil, whereas "Black Shikkui" is a powdered black plaster. You can choose between them depending on the application, desired finish color, and on-site workability.
